The Georgetown Lions Club will bring Santa Claus to town on Saturday December 2 to greet children and raise funds through lucky draw tickets for chickens and geese. On December 22 families on Main Street will receive nuts and oranges.
Mra Lex Schrag and Patsy of Tor onto spent the weekend with Mr and Mrs William Bullivant. Miss Rosamond Jackson of Toronto was a weekend guest with Miss Isobel Thompson. D McEdeekin of Valleyfield Quebec visited with his daughter and son in law Mr and Mrs A C McBride. Mrs Fred Harrison has returned to Toronto General Hospital for further treatment after an operation she underwent first.
Mrs. Maubrick Dixon arrives back in Canada after a year with the British Civil Nursing Reserve in England. She visits her parents in Georgetown while her husband Captain Maurice Dixon, formerly of Kapuskasing, returns from overseas service. Dixon crossed on the Manchester Shipper.
Fire, likely from defective wiring, gutted the B. A. Station operated by Harry Graham. Goods and equipment valued at 1400 dollars were lost, with partial insurance coverage. The blaze was reported by a group of girls to neighbour Mr A Speight, who notified the fire brigade. Firemen controlled the flames within minutes after arriving.
Word reaches press that the Lorne Scots Regiment will arrive in Brampton on December 16th or 17th. The unit travels from England aboard Anguish and Ops with C H Boyle leading. District personnel include Sgt J Smith Oakville Pte RC Colling Campbellville and Pte RC Ervin Milton.
Pte William Hillier of the RCASC returns home with his wife and family after service overseas since 1948. He served in France after D Day, with postings in Belgium, Holland and Germany, and worked at Prohineal Paper Ltd. Hillier is married to Edith Alcott and they have five children. His brother Pte Morley Varey and Sgt Russell Varey also recently returned, with Russell visiting town after docking in New York aboard the Queen Elizabeth.
Gur. Mervyn Cook returns to Canada aboard the Empress of Scotland with wife June Graham and daughter Myrna. He enlisted in 1942 in the Armoured Corps at Toronto, trained at Petawawa Debert and Sussex before serving three and a half years overseas in France Belgium Holland and Germany. He was employed by Alliance Paper Mills Ltd at enlistment.
Pte Jack Crawford of the Lorne Scots came home last weekend aboard the Queen Elizabeth after sixteen months in Italy and later in France and Holland. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Jack Crawford of Glen Williams. In June 1943 he married Wilhelmina Napier of Dundee land who arrived in Canada last May and has been living with his parents in Glen Williams.
Cpl H G Hayes arrives in Toronto on November 29 after nearly four years abroad serving with the Lorne Scots. He enlisted in April 1941 and served in Italy France Belgium Holland and Germany. He married Janet Morrison of Blanefield Scotland last May and plans to reunite here before next March.
Sgmn George Sargent last of three sons of Mr and Mrs Chris Sargent returns home from overseas service. He enlisted March 1942 and served at No 2 District Depot Toronto and Vimy Barracks Kingston before going overseas October 1943. He served in Belgium Holland and Germany after D Day. He was employed at Provincial Paper Mill at enlistment and is married to Enid Garvin with two sons Douglas and Donald.
LAC John Hunter a RCAP veteran who served in England and India returns to Georgetown with wife Marion Dick and daughter Catherine Margaret born after his departure. He enlisted April 1942 trained in Toronto St Thomas and Bagotville and served overseas from May 1943 sailing back via Queen Elizabeth last weekend. He arrived in England September 12 after India duty from September 1944 to this September.
Capt J L Lambert on leave from Georgetown High School position as principal. He joined the army in 1942 and sailed home aboard the Queen Elizabeth. He served at Camp Borden overseas with the Lorne Scots and later with NETD in England. Mrs Lambert and children Sylvia and Michael have resided on a farm in the Actén district since early fall.
Stoker Petty Officer Roy Preston and his wife Mrs. Doris Preston visit his parents on King Street. A veteran of over four years in the RNVR, he expects discharge later this month after serving on vessels including the Armentieres Winnipeg and the carrier Nabob torpedoed August 22, 1944. He has recently been aboard the destroyer Ottawa roaming from Canada to Scotland all summer. Doris King of Vancouver is his wife. they married two years ago last April. Prior to enlistment he worked in Toronto.
Cpl. H. G. Hayes expresses gratitude to friends and organizations in Georgetown and district for parcels and cigarettes received while overseas.
Herald Christmas shopping edition urges local Gea Georgetown merchants to meet demand despite shortages. With little snow this winter frost may affect crops next year. Stores plan extended hours and lively window displays to encourage early buying and support of home town trades.
At a poorly attended meeting in the Arena last night Georgetown Intermediate Hockey Club was formed with officers including President Jack T. Armstrong and Secretary-Treasurer Norman Hill. Norman Hill was named group convenor by OFLA to draft the league schedule and the club plans early practices with ice ready by the weekend.
The Limehouse Women's Institute met at Mrs Smethurst's with roll call on etiquette. Mrs E Miller spoke on current events and Mrs Smethurst on habits as cobwebs to cables. Mrs A W Benton read a paper on tuberculosis and fundraised for Christmas seals. A party committee was formed and proceeds from a December 18 euchre go to local children. A donation for British children was approved. Following the National Anthem lunch was served. A Hall Board dance Friday pleased attendees with Karns Brothers, Jack Noble, Helen Meredith, and R L Davidson as floor manager. The Bentons and S Wrights visited Toronto. Bauman Bros moved from Hawkesville after road work this season.
In memory notices for F. Sharpe of Barrie who died December 17, 1944 and Mary Mae White who died December 19, 1941 in Galt Hospital. Audrey M. Sharpe notes her England residence and family memorials. Mary Mae White is mourned by Len, Donald, Eileen, Marjorie and the Georgetown family.
Local notices list a December 17 Rhythm Rubes Orchestra concert at Esquesing, a December 19 Christmas Concert at Georgetown United Church, and a December 16 Vesper Service by Miss Margaret Govan. Other items mention Hydro power outage on Charles Street, a Daughters of the Church ticket draw won by Eleanor Traynor, and the Exquesing Agricultural Society dance with 150 dancers attending.
After a five week illness in hospital Mrs Mary Phillips died in Toronto. She was in her 88th year and a sister of Mrs Busan Colman of Georgetown Ontario.
