The Georgetown Lions Club met at the McGibbon House to pledge full cooperation to Ed McWhirter, manager of the Georgetown Juvenile Hockey Club, which has entered an Ontario Juvenile Hockey Association team. Transportation and home-town support are key for a successful year. plans for a $1000 government bond cashing and Red Cross backing were discussed amid notes on the Safety Patrol program.
Appeasements from J. F. Lindner H. Silver and W. O. Biehn for club membership were received and accepted at the gathering.
J. R. Barber of Rio de Janeiro, son of Mr and Mrs C H Barber of Georgetown, returns to join the Canadian Navy. He has lived in Brazil for three years with his wife and daughter Joan, worked at J Walter Thompson Advertising, and earlier served as art director in London. Barber hopes to serve as a wireless operator.
Beatrice Rosina Hancock daughter of Mr and Mrs John Hancock Glen Williams and Burt LaVerne Crewson son of Mr and Mrs Fred Crewson Acton married in a quiet ceremony at St George's Church officiated by Rev W G O Thompson. Bridesmaid Barbara Berry and best man William Harrop attended. The couple plans a Hamilton residence after a motor honeymoon. Halton County Council met in Mil ton on Tuesday November 26 with 1030 am address by R J Moore from the Department of Municipal Affairs on equalization. Col James Ballantine urged a county wide resolution to embolden the Civil Guard and to send a copy to the Attorney General, amid questions about Oakville objections and Home Guard origins.
The Georgetown Curling Club held its annual meeting on Tuesday evening December 3 at the Arena. President W. G. Bell chaired as officers for the coming year were elected, with Bell named President after minutes and committee reports were reviewed.
Georgetown Council met with all members present. Costigan and Bradley secured $250 for the public school heating trouble. Citizens urged action on a Main Street dance hall and the clerk was asked to seek legal guidance and draft a by law. Payments to local services and utilities were approved, and snow removal and a potential shared snow plow with the township were discussed. Dr. C H Best and Mrs Best bought 100 acres at Stewarttown for a summer home. he co discovered insulin and is a University of Toronto professor.
Almeda Ansley Dean widow of Professor H H Dean retired head of the O A C Dairy Department Guelph died at home November 28 1940. She lived in Georgetown for many years after early life in Guelph and work as head miller in Acton and later in Georgetown. Married in 1894 she and her husband toured Europe in 1895 and built a house on College Heights two years later. She is survived by her husband and sister Mrs A P Westerveldt of Clarkson.
Election results show James Costigan narrowly tops Ward 2 with 158 votes to Clifford Bradley's 153. T Rene Cave wins a two year term. rest of council and officials are acclaimed. Ward turnout marks first council vote since 1936 amid heavy snowfall and local church society officer elections.
The Georgetown branch of the Canadian Red Cross reports receipts as of November 28 totaling 3504.74 dollars toward a 4500 dollar goal. Many local residents and Stewarttown Limehouse districts remain to be canvassed. Cash donations and pledges total 3351.10 with special donations and projects far lower than prior year. Campaign to finish by month end.
A pupil from Georgetown Public School won the provincial first prize in the Essay and Poster Contest conducted by the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. The prize, a three dollar cheque, was presented during a Junior Red Cross program at the school with Miss Ellen McKay and Mr. O. Prune in attendance.
The Countl ess of Strathmore Chapter LODE held a Monday meeting at Mrs. O V Williams Main Street with Vice Regent presiding. Reports from secretary and treasurer were presented and $10 was voted for the town Christmas Hamper Fund plus $5 for the Women’s War Guest Fund. Plans were made for a ticket sale for a draw on a home made Christmas cake to be drawn at Robble’s Drug Store on Wednesday Dec 11.
In Georgetown the annual hockey club meeting elected Ernie Coles as president to lead operations. Norm Hil presided briefly in Sliver’s absence as the club reported a solid financial position with about 3400 dollars in balance and a portion directed to entering the OHA for 1910-41.
