Copper Cliff hosts the Ontario Midget NLH finals as the visiting North team defeats Georgetown 19 to 10 in the opener after a rain delay, with Copper Cliff’s pitching dominant and Morrow homering. The Pee Wee rematch ends 7 to 5 in four innings before darkness halts play.
Last evening about 6 30 two cars collided near Guelph and Water Streets at Calamity Corner. Eastbound driver C Davis and westbound driver G Sinclair, both of Georgetown, were joined in a near head on crash. Passengers and drivers suffered cuts and bruises but were resting at home. Chief W G Marshall led the investigation.
The Lorne Scots Regiment Band under Bandmaster Williams gave a fine park concert last Sunday. They expect a large turnout Thursday at the Canadian National Exhibition for Music Day competition, with their class likely late in the afternoon.
On Saturday August 26 the shield qualifying round was played with Sam Mackenzie posting 78 the low score. Douglas 83 Bert Willoughby 85 followed. The winner advances to match play. Tuesday night crowned the final mixed foursomes for the summer season with Miss Oral Chalmers and Percy Coffin and Miss A Hickey and O T McKay as winners. After the game about forty members enjoyed a corn roast around the Cedar Crest fire. A social evening ended with bridge at the Club House won by Miss Isabel Thompson.
Copper Cliff's New York Yankees defeated the Georgetown Cincinnati Reds two games to one in a best of three series this week to capture the Midget Baseball Championship. The photo lineup lists players Artie Wulff Wes McNeice Don Smith Herb Flynn Ed O'Reilly J and others with manager Gordon Allcott and coach Al Wulff.
The August 26 death of Earl Wilson is marked as a loss to the Ashgrove community. Sympathy is extended to his wife and relatives. Several visitors and locals are noted visiting relatives across nearby towns including Toronto Milton Mimico and Acton. The W.M.S. peach social is planned for mid September.
Mrs. Martin Cummins won last Wednesday’s Better Business Campaign draw ticket 6479. Tonight at 9:30 another draw requires ticket holders to be present. Lions Club sponsored the contest for four weeks and now asks if merchants are prepared to continue and take over the campaign.
Miss Phyllis Bainbridge returns from Quebec where she studied French. Miss Betty Bainbridge is appointed principal of Richards Landing Contination School. Miss Lillian Thormpseon comes home from a week with her aunt Mrs. A N. Cak in Georgetown. Palate Bagielig returns from holiday with William and relatives via Trans-Canada Air Line, Malton Airport, planning a sixteen hour return trip. cases of scarlet fever have.
The Secretary of State announced that Thanksgiving Day will be observed on the second Monday in October, October 9, 1939, with a proclamation to be issued soon. The measure follows the usual practice and designates a day of general thanksgiving.
After a short illness Miss Esther Pettit died at her residence Orchard View Blvd Toronto on Saturday August 26 and was buried Monday August 28 in Mount Pleasant Cemetery Toronto. She is survived by two brothers Melvin Pettit Parker California Morley Pettit Georgetown two sisters Mrs Alex Gracey Los Angeles and Dr Sarah P Roberts Oberlin Ohio and her niece and companion Mary Edith Pettit Toronto.
