A wild orange Cougar driven by Dixon of North Halton Motor Sales and owned by Frank Valk set a new H stock automatic drag record at the Canadian American National meet in Winnipeg on August 3, clocking 13.15 seconds for a quarter mile. Dixon credited a great mechanic, Dave Armstrong of Armstrong's Garage, for the improvement. The trio, active at Cayuga and Quinte, aim to clinch the National Championship in Indianapolis on Labour Day. It is Frank and Dave’s first year racing, Walt’s fifth.

Downtown parking plan eyed after Chamber talks
Property owners and merchants in the downtown area will be polled on a $25,000 parking and street improvement plan centered behind one block. A master plan for Main Street storefronts and lighting was presented by Toronto architect Paul Martel at a Chamber of Commerce meeting, with about 25 downtown businesses in attendance. A five year tax levy based on property assessments would fund hard surfacing lighting and marking the private municipal lot behind Halton and Peel Trust Co. and McGibbon Hotel, subject to majority approval. Midnight Fire Destroys 7th Line Bessey Barn
A large barn on the 7th Line of Esquesing near Stewarttown burned to the ground late Tuesday night, the seventh in a rising series of barn razings. Firefighters arrived after a neighbor spotted flames, with only hay straw and a small tractor inside. The Bessey family, long-time owners, lost a 1870s structure while the nearby shed and other farm buildings were spared thanks to prompt response.

Three Serious Accidents After Speed Limit Increase on Guelph Street
Over a 33 hour period three violent crashes on Guelph Street in Georgetown’s Corgetown Market area injured four people and caused about $6,000 in property damage. A 1966 Pontiac driven by Wilfred R. Bradbury of Fort Erie was wrecked after a collision at the Guelph Sinclair corner, leaving Bradbury with multiple injuries. A second crash near Saturday midnight involved a 1965 Plymouth and a 1961 Olds, sending two Toronto women, Bonnie Turcott and Helen In, to hospital with severe bruises. A third crash at the plaza entrance involved a 1968 Olds and a 1958 Chevrolet, with two women also hospitalized. Police investigated each incident. overall damages added to the known totals.

Staggered Classes Start At Centennial This Month
