Flight Lieutenant Doug Sargent arrives home on leave with his parents in Georgetown after serving with the RCAF since 1941 in Iceland and the British Isles. His brothers also serve. Alliance Local 474 held a July 28 picnic in Stanley Park Erin attended by 225 members and guests. A three direction program under Thomas Eason Jr featured many prize winners across boys and girls races, relays, crafts, and games. Delights included a delicious salad supper and a rain-shortened ball game between S and S and Alliance, ending with Bingo.

Norval Residents Form Fire Protection Group After Store Fire
After Mrs. J. Black’s general store and home burned last Wednesday in Norval village a public meeting formed the Norval Fire Protection Association. About 30 ratepayers attended, with Walter Fidler presiding and George C. Brown as secretary. An executive led by Norm Demerling was chosen. Grace McLaughlin became secretary treasurer. The group plans to raise 150 dollars to be shared between Georgetown and Brampton fire brigades and will report on protection ideas at a future gathering.

James Watson Pioneer Citizen Dies at 92 in Georgetown
James Watson aged 92 died after a five day illness in Toronto where he had lived at Tweedsmuir House. He was born Nassagaweya and farmed there before moving to Rockwood and Georgetown. Surviving are his children John R. London William E. Toronto Bertha Mrs R M Millar Vancouver and Laverne Thompson Jean of Toronto. Funeral held at his daughter’s home in Chinguacousy with pallbearers and community singing of The City Four Square. Interment Ebenezer Cemetery.

George Beckett Dies at 40 After Illness in Georgetown
George Dolg Beckett, beloved husband of Jean Brunton, died at his home Sunday evening July 22 after six months illness. A native of Blebo Craigs Scotland, he was a professional gardener who helped beautify many town homes. He had lived in Georgetown 16 years, married in 1936, and was a Knox Presbyterian member. Surviving are his widow, his parents, two sisters Elizabeth Scott and May MacPhail, and a brother Thomas Beckett. Funeral was July 23 at his home, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

Principal Walter Carpenter of Georgetown High School has received a letter from Niagara Camp cadet instructor A. B. Cockburn praising seven G.H.S. cadets for exemplary behavior. Cockburn led No. 9 platoon and said the boys acquitted themselves as gentlemen at all times.
