East York Names New Police Chief from Eight Applicants

Constable Roy Maley will become Georgetown's police chief on June 1st, succeeding Cpl. Ray Beckett as the provincials detachments wind down. Haley, a 6 foot 3 inch 215 pound veteran, led East York service since 1935 and served overseas as staff sergeant 1943 to 1945. Council interviewed two candidates for town engineer. no decision reached. A court of revision preceded the meeting and minor assessment roll changes were addressed.

Georgetown’s oldest resident Mrs Ruddell dies at 97

Minerva M Howson Ruddell, 97, a longtime Georgetown resident and pioneer family member, died at 24 Charles Street. Born May 28, 1657 in Hornby, she taught at Ashgrove School, supported WWI war effort handiwork, and was a life member of the Women’s Missionary Society. Funeral at McClure Funeral Home with interment in Ashgrove Cemetery attended by relatives from multiple cities.

Mr. Don Peacock from Brampton visited the Gibsons as the Young People’s group met in the church basement. The topic “The Faith of the Jones Family” explored faith in crisis through Scripture and prayer. A planning committee formed for summer services during the minister’s holidays.

Lacrosse Season Shapes Up Locally

Local lacrosse scene gains momentum as Georgetown N&Gs sign players for the 1055 edition. N. J. Duke Coward takes on management and OLA officials meet at Royal York Hotel with John Haines Joe Louth and Bob McCandless in attendance. Tom Haines nearly led lacrosse revival here and was offered an executive post but declined while aiding the N&Gs. Dart Tournament At Georgetown Legion Hall Draws Teams

Saturday afternoon in Georgetown Legion Hall Cana dian Legion hosted a B7 zone dart tournament with teams from Acton Brampton Port Credit Streetsville and Georgetown. Gord Jamieson won the singles title and the doubles went to Fred Gilmer and Henry 8h. Next Saturday Ontario teams return for a district tournament at the same venue.

Hope to Rush School Addition for September

The public school board discussed a second 2 room addition with J. B. Parkin Associates as architects at a meeting last Thursday. The Wriggleaworth School project aims to be ready by September. Parkin will present sketches next Wednesday with tenders likely soon after. Town council has approved the addition.

Wright elected Metropolitan of Ontario Synod

In Ontario the Ecclesiastical Province of Ontario elected Bishop W. L. Wright as Metropolitan succeeding the retiring Most Rev R. J. Renison. Wright, from an ecclesiastical family, educated at Queen's University and Trinity College, was Dean of Algoma at thirty nine and becomes Metropolitan at fifty. He is described as an outgoing churchman and respected leader.

Hamilton Construction Awarded Bridge Contract

A 940 bridge contract in Fadnesing was awarded to Georgetown firm Hamilton Construction after tenders were opened. The project on No. 5 in concession 4 carries a base price of 5 540 dollars with extra charges for concrete and excavation. One minor claim was paid and a by law set duties for the building inspector. Two readings of a 25 000 dollar by law for Milton Heights school funds preceded transfer to the Municipal Board.

Annual Easter Ball at Brampton Armoury hosts notable guests

The annual Easter Ball hosted by the Lorne Scots at Brampton Armoury on Friday evening April 15 drew Lt Col S R Charters and Mrs Charters Brig Ian Cumberland Major John Catto and Mrs Catto Mr A C Munro and Mrs Munro Captain John Pallett MP and Mrs Pallett plus officers from Toronto and Hamilton. The event featured spring decorations by RQMS Rudd and team Pipe Major J Sellers directed Scottish dancing and a Canadian Guards band orchestra. A buffet supper followed as social notes say readers should send more items to the Herald.

Wheel Chair and Bed Added to Local Loan Cupboard

The Georgetown Red Cross Society branch will add a wheel chair and a hospital bed to its loan cupboard. Funds will be sought via a public canvass, first in years for the branch, with officers reelected including LeRoy Dale and Mrs. W. E. Nodwell.
