A council motion to study a Monday to Saturday intertown bus route with hourly service and 25 cent adult fares failed 5 to 4. Coun. Hildebrandt and Reeve Elliott led the motion amid accusations of secret meetings and limited ratepayer input.
At Georgetown council monday night a recorded vote on a motion to adjourn failed two to three. Counc. Francis questioned how another adjournment motion could be tabled, noting it is illegal to present two motions on the same subject at one meeting. The mayor blamed a prior ridiculous motion setting eleven o clock adjournment unless 23 votes opposed. The meeting adjourned near midnight with accounts left for another meeting.
The Local 14161 United Mine Workers strike against Smith and Stone Limited in Codgeetown reaches its 12th day with no new talks or proposals. About 543 workers are involved. wages and incentive plans remain disputed while essential services continue and police report no violence. A Saturday parade and a union meeting were planned.
Smith and Stone vice president Henry Martin told reporters the firm has begun implementing a Conciliation Board recommendation by hiring a consulting firm to train staff in a new job evaluation system. He warned the strike harms employment and business, citing lost orders and customer defections. He defended a 3 percent raise as fair and noted projected costs to the company.
The town council debated a request from local 34161 of the United Mine Workers to hold a parade and use the town park on Saturday April 25 at 11 am. Deputy Reeve W Hunter urged assistance to resolve the dispute while Coun Hildebrandt opposed consent noting the strike is between employer and union. Mayor J Gibbons supported limited use of park facilities. vote narrowly passed with only Hildebrandt opposing.
Delrex president Rex Heslop announced the sale of Delrex Developments to an unidentified finance house this week indicating a major ownership change.
Bell Telephone Co. hires International Survey Ltd. to operate from its Eglinton Avenue office and poll 700 Georgetown customers. About 550 interviews expected with councillors allowed to monitor calls and hear both sides of conversations. The council agrees to pay $800 and abide by survey results, with some opposition from Dr. Hildebrandt who argues the survey unnecessary.
A letter from W B H Bolton Director of Municipal Accounting for the Department of Municipal Affairs sparked a heated council debate Monday night. He returned the 193 financial statement for auditor clarification and urged the statement not be published yet while noting deficits in the water system and limits on borrowing by Parks and Parking authorities. The director recommended a separate 1964 levy to cover a $4 642 Parking Authority deficit and repay a $30 000 arena loan. Council members argued over who owes what and why, citing industry levies and general revenue impacts. The mayor and council clashed over responsibility for the water deficit and misapplied funds while auditors warned of mounting deficits across departments.
Hi Lo Equipment plans a three week move from King Street to a new plant on Dixie Road at Highway 401. The 47 employee firm will operate the same business with some personnel changes, moving one department at a time. Major products include structural steel, lifting equipment, and hydraulic trucks.
