A jaycee boat race on the river near Georgetown nearly turned tragic as a whirlpool near the dam swamped a craft. Five men escaped injury after minutes of cold water and rope rescues, with Underhill and Hyde leading the frantic pull to safety. The event drew about 100 contestants in 40 to 50 boats, with winners including Underhill and the final finishers Reynolds and Brown.
Georgetown Fair Board urges council to back rebuilding the park grandstand. Board president Stenz Hall says new directors will join to boost community involvement. Garfield McGilvray notes a 25 percent grant up to 25 000 dollars is available. board may contribute 2000–3000 dollars. The $250 grant was authorized after Donna Denison invites attendance at the April 24 Recreational Committee meeting. Peter Carter resigns as North Halton Golf Club pro. replacement is Don Findley of Northwood Golf Club.
Georgetown Raiders win opening game of Western League final at Durham 5 4 in overtime against the Durham Huskies. Jack Gudgeon scored his fourth goal late in the OT to give Georgetown the 1 0 lead in the best of seven series. Norton had two goals for the Raiders with Lockhurst solid in goal.
Fifth Georgetown Cubs learn about animal clinics and railroads this week. They visited Georgetown Animal Clinic where Dr. Brian Buckrell showed the facilities including the surgery room and an X ray of a dog hit by a car. Dr. Buckrell answered questions on pet care. At the railway yard, Jim Colter explained switch lights rail weights and train operating basics. The boys were guided by the Colters and several adults.
James Tost son of Mr and Mrs Jack Tost Georgetown has been named the 1969 winner of the Kitchener Waterloo Record and the K W Press Club general proficiency prize in the diploma journalism program at the University of Western Ontario. The award will be presented April 11 at the K W Press Club. Jim is a 1968 economics graduate from UWO. The proficiency prize is an annual award for diploma program students and this marks its second year.
The Georgetown Fire Department battled several grass fires around town this week as fire season began last week with the first series of calls. Officials warn that the season’s length and severity hinge on residents using common sense when burning off grass or rubbish near dry fields.
A Shelley Street family will live in a trailer for five weeks while their home at 21 Shelley is restored after a Thursday fire and heavy smoke. Doug Getty, home sick from high school, found flames in the basement furnace area, alerted the fire department, and was briefly inside in pajamas before escaping as the blaze intensified. The fire damaged a recreation room and flooring, coated interiors with soot, and dislocated the family consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Getty and three children. two sons stayed with relatives in Chatham. No damage estimate was available at press time.
Tuesday night the budget presentation revealed changes in grants to boards and commissions with a surprising drop from the previous year. Funds were allocated across several entities, reflecting revised priorities and potential impacts on services.
At midnight Tuesday the council set the residential mill rate at 68 and industrial at 75.15, offsetting a large drop in rates by reassessment. The change raises the average taxpayer by about 35 dollars, with some paying little more and others much more as education costs shift share. Controversy surrounded motions and debates among council members over the final figures and process.
In a tense scene at the base of the lower paper mill dam Lynnte Hyde Monty Hyde and Dave Underhill struggle to free their craft from a strong back-current as their barrel boat swamps. Rescuers Leo Wolf Norm Long and Herb Wild lower ropes in a tug-of-war with the churning water while Bob Wolf in an inner tube aids as lifeboat. The incident occurred during Saturday's Crazy Boat race.
Police report weekend burglaries at Murray Motors on Mountainview Road, Masson Motors on Guelph Street, and Dr. M Wosburgh's dental office in the Halex Building at 69 Mill Street. Cash register stolen from Murray Motors and cash from the dentist’s office. breaches occurred via broken side windows at the car dealerships and a forced door at the dentist.
A 17 month old Debbie Ross was rushed from 47 McGilvray Crescent to Georgetown Hospital in a police cruiser after a high fever from an ear infection caused a convulsion. Constable John Liver and Cadet Brian Farrell assisted the emergency. The child was reported in good health under hospital surveillance at press time.
