Taxpayers' Association head blasts Canadian debt policy

Capt. W. C. C. Innes of the Taxpayers' Association of Canada spoke at a Georgetown Lions Club meeting urging scrutiny of government taxation. He warned of a seven million dollar debt, rising costs and duplications between federal and provincial services, calling for budget cuts and a national approach to relief and policy. Mayor Gibbons and Lions offered brief remarks and a vote of thanks.

Dr C V Williams Addresses Local Ladies Chapter Meeting

Dr C V Williams spoke at a regular LODE chapter meeting held April 3 at Mrs K M Langdon's home. Plans were made for a May fundraising bridge event and a Bestowal dinner at McGibbon Hotel with speakers Mrs Morrison and Mrs Brown among others. He praised the chapter's patriotic work and urged support for public health clinics including tuberculosIs, mental hygiene, toxoid vaccination and dental efforts, plus endowing a cat at Toronto Sick Children’s Hospital.

Lawn Bowlers Social Evening At Legion Hall

Lawn Bowlers Club held a social evening featuring progressive bridge and euchre at the Legion Hall with over a hundred attendees. Prize winners included Bridge ladies Miss Olive Logan and gents Mr. R Prust, Euchre ladies Miss Marjory Hunter and gents Mr. R T Cave, with Mrs. Jos Gibbons and Mrs. R Erwin as consolation recipients. A lunch followed and club president Mr J Richardson invited all to join the coming bowling season.

The Georgetown Men's Bridge Club celebrated its first anniversary at Param with officers for 1938 39 elected. President William King served alongside vice president T Param and secretary treasurer S F Chap. Hughes Cleaver Unanimous Choice for Liberal MP

A Milton theatre convention named Hughes Cleaver MP as the Liberal candidate for the forthcoming general election. Delegates from every ward chose him unanimously, with R. J. Deachman and Thomas Blakelock addressing the meeting and Georgetown delegates sending about twenty five representatives. Cleaver thanked the delegates and outlined reforms he would pursue if re-elected.

Town Council approves April 30 daylight saving start in Georgetown

The April council meeting in Georgetown records approval of Daylight Saving Time from April 30 at 12.01 am to September 17 at midnight. Mayor Joseph Gibbons presides as council discusses sewer, drainage, and a souvenir edition ad. Funds are approved for Salvation Army and various town expenses.

Ballinafad Social Notes From Week End Visits

Mrs A H Forster of Toronto spent the weekend with her sister Mrs A R Merriam. Rev and Mrs A O W Foreman visited with Mr Foreman’s mother in Hamilton. Mrs Foreman is poorly and bed bound. Mrs B Vannatter visited Toronto for the weekend. Miss Phyliss Bainbridge of Erin visited the Manse on Saturday. The flu struck Ballinafad’s two oldest residents Mrs Agnes Young and Mr John McKechnie, with illness keeping them bedridden. United Church Sunday service featured prize and certificate presentations to eight Sunday school pupils who wrote on the National Temperance Course. Mrs C M Beswick spent the weekend with friends in Toronto.

The Young People’s Union met under Ruth Dierlam. Hamilton Conference Branch exec in Simcoe. Easter bank offering by W M Q Auxiliary at Ashgrove United Church with sixty ladies. Miss Christina Baxter spoke on India. Local ladies traveled to Coordertown for bank offering led by Mrs Murray from Toronto conference.

Well-Known Toronto Choir to Visit Georgetown

St. George's Church Choir of Toronto under Captain D. Lindon will visit Knox Presbyterian Church in Georgetown on April 20. The 60-voice ensemble is renowned as one of Canada’s finest with Captain Lindon noted for leadership and Simeon Joyce as organist. Proceeds will support a local cause and a Hockey Club Dance is planned for April 21.
