Nathaniel Butler, former presidentof Colby University and for many years prominently connected with the j University of Chicago,' was revealed yesterday. He died at his home here Thursday, aged 74.Coming- from Maine to do educational work in Hake Forest, 111., in 1873. Ur. Butler served on the faculty of the old University of Chicago in 18®4. and came to the present University of Chicago two years after its organize* Bon under President William Riant y Harper.Ur. Butler served the University of Chicago as director of University extension and professor of literature, and after his return from the presidency of Colby, as dean of the department of education and of the college.He was professor of I^atin and English at the University of Illinois from 1889 to J8lt;C.At the time of his death he was assistant to the president of the University of Chicago. He was president of Colby from 1895 to 1901.He is survived by his widow*, five sons and a daughter. He was horn at East port, Maine.
