Reducing Shire Rates Difficulties for Tungamah Shire
The Tungamah Shire Council explains why rate cuts are not possible under the 1934 budget. Fixed and essential expenditures total £10,045, with £10,821 expected from existing rates and miscellaneous revenue, leaving £776 for new road works. A lower rate would block grants and new projects, worsen finances, and threaten future Country Roads Board repayments. Arrears exceed £8,000 and migrant settlers debts may be written off by government action, harming ratepayers. The council urges careful financial planning and protests the proposed write-offs.
