Nathalia meeting debates council yard referendum plan
At a Nathalia Agricultural Society gathering in Na thalia the issue of corporation valuation yards was discussed. A motion to favor the proposal failed and was amended to defer until an irrigation scheme is established. About 40 attended. 14 supported the amendment and seven supported the motion. The council was asked to seek a ratepayer referendum in Western and Moira Ridings, though the Local Government Act blocks this. If council borrows for yards a referendum could force ratepayer voting. The meeting, led by G S Fairman, noted the yards affect all ratepayers. A McDowell advocated yards as beneficial, while the shire engineer’s cost estimates suggested insufficient revenue but omitted items that could push revenue above charges. Yards costing about £2000 could be built modularly to expand later without disturbing layout.
