Talking films bring realism to screen drama says Arzner
Dorothy Arzner, director of Sarah and Son, argues that adding sound and dialogue to motion pictures turns illusion into realism. The talking film, she says, convinces audiences with both sight and sound, unlike silent cinema. The piece notes Ruth Chatterton stars, with Fredric March and others in supporting roles, and mentions Grand Opera on the screen and Honey as a musical comedy.
