Bequests disputed in Carlisle Town Council debate
At Carlisle Town Council a dispute over a 1600002 bequest to Carlisle Corporation Carlisle Cathedral and Catholic charities from Edward Stuart Wilson was discussed. Wilson claimed a will from moneylender John Montague Upcroft making him sole heir, but Upcroft’s will left property to his mother who predeceased him. The Crown would inherit if the estate accrued to a felon while under sentence. Wilson had died in 1872 after a forgery conviction and ticket-of-leave. The council noted suspicious attestation and possible forfeiture.
