Liverpool Congregationalism marks hundredth birth anniversary
A large audience gathered at Great George Street Chapel on Sept 3 to celebrate 100 years since the birth of Congregationalism in Liverpool. Rev Samuel Pearson presided and highlighted the church's origins from 1618 Toxteth chapel, the Newington Chapel opening in 1777, and the growth to about twenty seven local worship sites within seven miles, along with charitable and educational work and strong ties with Baptists and Presbyterians. The event recalled key ministers from David Bruce to Thomas Spencer and Thomas Raffles, and noted the 1841 rebuilding after a fire and recent vestry additions funded at over 2000.
