Congregational Union Meeting Heats Up Over Temperance Debate
The Union opened with a large service at Salem Chapel led by Rev. J G Miall and Rev T G Horton. Dr Aveling’s address on Outside the Fold drew mixed reaction while temperance reform and church education dominated later discussions.
Outside the Fold and the temperance pledge at Bradford meet
The thirty seventh autumnal meeting of the Congregational Union of England and Wales opened in Bradford with a sermon by Rev C Wilson. The day included a large attendance and a chair address on external church relations, urging broader interchurch fellowship and councils for resolving differences. The temperance society session in Bowling Chapel pressed rapid reforms to curb intemperance and improve social conditions.
