Disestablishment Debate Disrupted at Newton Heath Meeting

A crowded Newton Heath Public Hall heard Rev. McDougall of Darwen discuss disestablishment and endowment of the English Church. Interrupters, mostly young workers, staged a disorderly riot before calmer order returned and the lecturer continued despite hostility.

Rev C Williams on the State Church in Turkey

The Ossett Observer notes two lectures by Mr. Williams of Accrington on the State Church in Turkey. He argued the church was state-backed, Mahommedan fatalism limited liberty, and that Turkish gender roles restricted women's public influence, contrasting with England's progress via women's status.

Mr Gordon Lectures Draw Big Liberal Crowds

In Kettering the Liberal Association hosted Mr Gordon with Rev Higgins in attendance and hearty support from Rev Myers and Mr Stockorn. Other first meetings followed in Killamarsh Wapsley Rerrorp and Ombwell with strong crowds and lively discussions led by Mr Muscroft and Mr Wilson.

Fisher Lectures on Ecclesiastical Endowments and Disestablishment

Mr J Fisher spoke at Acton on the right of the nation to deal with ecclesiastical endowments with A Norman chairing. Opposing views by Mr Hooper drew a half hour of discussion before Fisher’s reply was well received. Additional lectures followed in Torrington and Ansty with broad attendance and public votes at the close.

Local Lectures Draw Solid Interest in Leicester Exposition

Mr. T. Lawrence of Leicester chaired a modest attendance expositing the subject with keen interest and warm wishes for a return visit. At Grosy a first meeting on Monday 20th in the Independent Chapel reported good attendance and attentive listening to Mr Hipwood with thanks and invitations to other villages. In Tutbury on Monday evening November 20 the Rev J S James spoke on the Pilgrim Fathers in the Congregational Schoolroom to a crowded meeting presided by Rev J Wolfendale with Mr Hastings also speaking.

Opening of the National Grave Yards to Nonconformists

The Watchman calls for national burial law reform to allow Wesleyans and other Nonconformists to use parish graveyards. It argues current laws bar Christian burial for Nonconformists, fueling clashes with Episcopalian authority and sparking repeated scandals. It urges preemptive government action and a unified solution rather than separate graveyards.
