Church Rate Prosecution at Pontypool Courthouse
Eight Trevethin parishioners appeared before magistrates E H Phillips and Rev D Jones for non payment of a church rate alleged to be due to William Williams and William Williams Phillips new churchwardens. A large crowd witnessed the proceedings as the eight were selected from a longer list of recusants including eight dissenting independents by the churchwardens to be made examples of the law.
