Liberation Society Holds Hanley District Conference

The Liberation Society held a district conference at Hanley Town Hall chaired by Mayor T Pidduck. J Carvell Williams attended from the Executive Committee with many Pottery town representatives. The policy backed immediate agitation for disestablishment of the English Church. J Hancock of Tunstall noted widespread opposition to the State Church among Wesleyans and younger ministers.

Conference involvement in Free-church discussions across towns

Ministers and laity joined the Society in discussions led by Rev J Legge and others. After sessions in Burslem the meeting moved to tea then Town Hall addresses by Bodley Williams and Davies. In Leicester a four part series opened at Temperance Hall with Rev C C Coe arguing that Church and State relations hurt both sides. Next week Rev A Mackennal will debate if Establishments aid religion.
