Threat to the Republic From Don Carlos Rise

The text warns that growing strength of Don Carlos risks provoking unity among Unitarian and Federal Republicans against a common threat. It suggests the peril could push revolutionary towns to settle quarrels and oppose absolutism and Church ascendancy, shifting focus from forms of government to a national enemy.

Parliament Bore and the Macfie Episode

A London Times column recalls a crowded House of Commons scene around Mr. Macfie’s contentious Colonial relations notice. It notes hon. guests yawning, the Speaker’s response, and critique of Macfie as a bore. It also mentions Gladstone’s handling of the bill and remarks by Lord Edmond Fitzmaurice and Mr. Fawcett.

Remains of Dr Guthrie Interred in Grange Cemetery Edinburgh

The late Rev Dr Guthrie was buried Friday in Grange Cemetery Edinburgh alongside noted Free Church figures. Services were held at Newington Free and United Presbyterian churches. The long procession, about a mile, included ragged school and industrial brigade groups, local presbytery bodies, and city officials, drawn by four horses. About 15,000 witnessed the event. A wreath was laid by a ragged-school boy. The Duke of Argyll conveyed Queen Victoria’s sympathy to the family. A memorial sermon in London praised Guthrie’s life, recalling his Edinburgh Greyfriars era and his influence on the poor, in a tribute echoing earlier deaths of noted reformers.
