London Church Accommodation Gap Spurs Union Effort
London congregations faced a huge shortfall in church seats as population rose from 1877 to 1878. The Union urged rapid building, noting only about 20,000 extra seats in all London churches while 68 percent of the new population needed 48 new 1,000-seat churches. Across Smaller London, Free Churches and Church of England totalled 1,082,826 seats, far below the 2,074,836 needed for 58 percent.
