A long account of a public meeting denouncing state endowments for the church, with ministers T H Moreau J H Wilson and others praising voluntaryism, condemning magistrates intervention, recounting resolutions, and noting reactions from the Baptist and Free Church contingents. It also reports on extortion claims by vicarage agents against Idle and other places, and debates over church establishment.
A Thursday Edinburgh meeting of religious liberty supporters heard Rev James Robertson and John Dunlop report on the London Anti state church Conference. Bassie Wilson chaired before about 1200 attendees. Robertson appealed for continued agitation and Dunlop praised the conference as a hopeful sign amid public debate.
An auxiliary to the British Anti state church Association is formed at Derby. A committee for the management of its affairs is appointed with aid from several dissenting churches. Public lectures are planned to inform the ignorant and provoke inquiry, led by Mr Gawthorn. A library and tract distribution are contemplated.
A public vestry in Panisa or St Many Newton held an adjourned meeting to set a church rate. A prior proposal of halfpenny in the pound aimed to raise £60 for the workhouse chaplain, yielding about £250, was almost unanimously rejected. Since the last meeting, parish excitement has surged as Mr Churchwarden Brown took the lead amid disputes.
