A Manchester Union speech by Mr. Holland attacks the Establishment and warns that continued denominational policy benefits the Church of England and risks alignment with Rome. The Wesleyan Education Committee official letter underscores calls for universal religious schooling and warns of clergy hostility driving Methodists toward Dissent.
The Bishop of Exeter preached at St. Andrew's Plymouth in aid of parish National Schools. Referring to 1 Corinthians 14 20 he urged dis ciples to understand and justify obedience, stressing reason behind biblical principles. He cautioned against blind compliance without comprehension and called for thoughtful faith.
In a sermon the speaker argues that believers must use their own understanding to grasp spiritual truth rather than mere obedience. He cites Jesus and Paul to show faith as internal conviction, not blind submission, and urges Protestants to cultivate private judgment and liberty of conscience for national education.
The Rev George Gilfillan of Dundee argued for a secular schooling system while allowing optional religious teaching at home or by Sabbath schools. He urged excluding the Shorter Catechism from schools, saying it covers topics beyond ordinary instruction. He spoke on the education question during a Sunday evening sermon.
