Controversy Over Liberation Society and Wesleyan Unity

A Wesleyan critique argues the Liberation Society seeks to end Church and State ties, not attack religion, and notes ministers must balance public action with ministerial loyalty. It cites Sheffield 1875 resolutions, presses for equal law for ministers and laymen, and warns against internal division within Methodism. The piece defends ongoing adherence to disestablishment aims while urging unity.

Free Church Leader Rainy Urges Disestablishment

A Scottish news note discusses Principal Rainy’s Christmas lectures at Peterhead and Fraserburgh. It lauds his clear stance for disestablishment, contrasts him with Dr Begg, and notes expectations of a stronger push from Rainy and Dr John Cairns. It also mentions Dr Elder Cumming’s Ireland remarks and a boast about ministers defecting to the Establishment, warning of conspiracy amid strong Church sentiment.

Disturbances at Hatcham Church Show Admission Controls

The Hatcham church service at St James was well attended but not overcrowded as wardens admitted only those with advance cards and sealed doors once full. Inside, eight pictures on the choir screen depict Heaven and Hell among other scenes, with a wax beam showing a cross. The sacristan opened the chancel gates around 10:30 for matins as the service began.
