York meeting denounces confessional drift in Church of England
At York on Wednesday a meeting chaired by Earl Fitzwilliam condemned the introduction of confession and related practices into the Church of England and pledged to support reforms. A memorial to the Queen, signed by thousands, urged restraint and urged the archbishop of York to consider the matter.
Church split clears path for Cummins case
In a formal notification the diocese declares any episcopal act in pending proceedings null and void. It urges church members to respect law and order and refrain from supporting Dr. Cummins’s movement.
Free Church plan splits England into four dioceses
The Free Church of England council at its last meeting resolved to create four dioceses in England and one in Wales, each with its own bishop due to increased work under Bishop Price of Ilfracombe. The Pennefather memorial stands at 4,502 pounds, to fund an endowment for Mildmay Conference Hall, with trustees allowed to contribute up to 2,000 pounds for Mrs. Pennefather to fit a cottage hospital. Rev H T Robjohns of Newcastle received and then withdrew a resignation after church request. Revival services expand in Edinburgh with large noon prayer meetings and crowded evening services, plus Bible lectures and Holy Spirit emphasis. St John’s United Presbyterian in Foresthill marks its second anniversary with growth in membership, children’s work, and a planned new building. Horniman funds the ground for 100 pounds. Leicester Gallowtree Gate Chapel Jubilee features include historical addresses, a large social gathering, and praise for Dr. Legge’s legacy.

Shadow of Death: a Candid View of Holman Hunt's Work
A reader defends Holman Hunt's latest painting, arguing it conveys two opposed ideas through Jesus and Mary. The Saviour is depicted with slender, refined form and a face that expresses "My God How long" while bearing the burden of human fall and future sacrifice. Mary is shown in quiet sorrow, imagining an earthly kingdom and the contrast with earthly luxury and degradation.
