The piece attacks Whig and Radical plans for state endowment of the Irish priesthood. It argues the scheme preserves landlord oppression, blinds Irish poverty, and turns Catholic clergy from agitators to quietists. It warns the end result is political profligacy and a false liberalism.
The long awaited Evangelical Alliance conference began with about 500 in attendance at Treemasons Hall. Delegates included leading ministers from the United States and Europe, with two thousand tickets issued and sessions running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The meeting debated press access and appointed officers for the proceedings.
