The Attorney General declares provinces will not assent to prosecutions under the Dominion Lords Day Act. Hon. F. J. Fulton says provinces may enforce or refuse prosecutions as permitted by law. Socialists applaud as the Dominion Lords Day alliance may push federal action to compel enforcement.
T J Smith of Diamond Vale Coal and Iron Mines Vancouver buys the Summerland Supply Company building housing furniture hardware feed and harness departments for 10000. The structure adjoins his wharf which is being extended six hundred feet and covered as a warehouse. A fine residence is under construction on his estate. The building will house twenty men and all will be needed when his 10000 trees bear.
Agreement drawn up between operators and coal miners to extend over two years. Terms to be released after a general vote. Mackenzie King says district executive board approved terms and will advocate approval. Vote held across the Boundary. if accepted operations resume and the Conciliation Board may be unnecessary.
W. C. Ward formerly Bank of British Columbia manager and Mrs Ward along with Miss Ward arrived in Victoria from Jingland last Wednesday night. Ward was among the owners of the Douglas Lake Cattle ranch, recently sold for 1000000 dollars and now tied to the transfer to new owners.
The O Keefe and Greenhow ranches at the head of Okanagan lake were sold for 700000 to a Belgian syndicate. The 18000 acre fertile lands lie between Armstrong and Vernon with 5000 acres suitable for fruit growing. Purchasers plan to divert water from the Earl Grey canal and irrigate then subdivide into five and ten acre plots for sale in London.
The V. V. and E. railway tracklaying reached the boundary last week and advances toward Keremeos. Track expected to reach Princeton by year end with reliable authority stating the line will reach Coldwater by next fall and extend to Middlesboro.
Oldtimers fear fresh floods as heavy winter snowfall in the Rockies and Sikirk mountains melts with approaching spring. They recall the 1904 Fraser and Columbia river floods that caused loss of life and widespread damage.
Heslop has taken over the Metropolitan Meat Market farm James Pooley and will continue business at the old stand.
M Adams of Merritt was thrown from a broncho this week suffering a dislocated shoulder and a bruised side. The note also lists local train arrangements in Kamloops and a Kamloops wedding. It advertises Nicola Valley building lots 42 by 210 feet priced at 125 dollars each through G M Brash Real Estate Agent Nicola with urging prompt action.
A. W. Lundbom aged eighty six, longtime British Columbia pioneer, died at Surrey Centre from heart disease. Swedish born, he came to the Cariboo gold era, ran mule pack trails, later ranching in Nicola and Surrey. Victoria Day celebration plans in Nicola proceed with $300 already raised and CPR trains to run until seven. The Ladies' Aid will handle refreshments. A Friday evening court house meeting will finalize the program.
The company reports three cars of coal per week are shipped. Excellent work is noted on the property with the main tunnel now over 600 feet, revealing a fine body of coal.
Nicola district items report steady work at Coal Gully with a 600 feet tunnel in good coal and water systems installed. Manager W H Armstrong and engineer J B Haddard visit, while Bruce Warden joins to assist Faulds. The company ships 100 tons weekly to the railway and expects to support a town soon. The quarterly and trustee boards of the Methodist church met in Lower Nicola on Monday April 29. Rev T H Wright led prayers and reports were given on Sunday school work and church property, all holdings free of debt. The annual district meeting is set for Kamloops May 18 and 14, and a June picnic was approved.
G B Armstrong's new two storey 26 by 80 foot store at Diamond Vale is under way and expected to open soon. Rev Dr White spoke on the positive outlook from material and ecclesiastical standpoints with railroad connection noted. A R Carrington was elected by ballot to attend the annual district meeting and re elected secretary of the board. Widespread church interest is seen and future prospects look bright.
Dr. George E. Davenport and John Jp. Cunningham of Vancouver traveled with J. E. Bate of Aspen Grove into the Coldwater area this week to inspect timber interests in which they are involved.
Last fall Nicola general stores adopted an early closing policy that expired on April 3. A large residents petition asked to extend the hours and merchants decided to close on Tuesdays Wednesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. and on Mondays Fridays and Saturdays at 9 p.m.
Jim Fish and Jonah, both Sullivan reserve residents, figure as principals in a police court case today. Booze is cited as the alleged underlying cause of the dispute.
The case Munro versus the executors of the Gillie estate will be heard this week at Kamloops assizes. A number of witnesses and interested parties will depart this week to attend. The matter concerns the Lake View ranch.
Foreman Trodden allows team passage as a rapid construction push proceeds on the new Nicola River bridge. Grading of the road is advancing and Nicola town expects a first class approach to the railway station within weeks.
Engineers praise Nicola coal as splendid steam coal with very little ash and no clinkers. Two carloads moved through on Wednesday amid favorable reports from Armstrong Advertiser.
Provincial Inspector Cunningham destroyed an entire carload of nursery stock arriving from Tennessee for Summerland planting. Inspections condemned 4463 apple trees 103 pear trees 1684 peach trees and eight cherry trees. The woolly apple louse detected on apples had not been seen in the province before and could have caused severe harm.
