Lillooet Farmers Institute Holds Annual Meeting at Lower Nicola

The Lillooet Farmers Institute met at Lower Nicola with fair attendance. H. S. Cressbey presided, G B Armstrong was secretary, and officers for the year were elected including D. Dodding as president and R. H. Wiang as vice president. The group discussed naming the institute Nicola and government speakers on cattle-raising Western conditions. H. S. Cleasty was chosen as delegate to the Central Farmers Institute in Victoria on the 27th.

Mrs McEwen of Hedley Dies Last Week

Mrs McEwen wife of Dr McEwen of Hedley died last week KE Flomerfelt secretary of the Vancouver Tourist Association arrived in town on Thursdays stage He with other Vancouver gentlemen is interested in coal properties on the Coldwater River and leaves for the coast the following morning two navvies employed on railway construction arrived in town this week and with a fair sized jug appropriated a couple of bottles whisky from the hotel Constable notified found them near the Pooley ranch brought them in Geo Murray and J D Gillie pleaded guilty Wednesday evening were given three days hard labor and the street is being cleaned up

Death of an Old Timer Finlaison 89 in Victoria

Obituary notes the death of 89 year old Finlaison at his Victoria residence. A pioneer of the city since 1859 after earlier service in Canada during the 1837 rebellion, he later worked in customs until 1890 and brokered business until last year. He leaves a widow and ten children. his brother-in-law is Thomas Carrington of Nicola.

The winning express traveled in 30 seconds amid lively side shows including a Japanese fortune teller, a fancy goods stall, an ice cream parlor, and a candy stall drawing strong visitor interest.

A rushing sale of picture postcards and valentines sparked a lively event. Cupid's heart contest drew much laughter while a clarinet solo by Mr. Paterson and other music enriched the program. Proceeds go to the Ladies' Aid totaling about $141 from the evening.

The Masonic hall gathering in Kamloops on February 22 promises a season highlight. Nicole residents will attend while L H Beamish, recently in Nicola, plans to visit Savonas soon. Mr and Mrs G B Armstrong visited Friday and Mrs Armstrong stayed for the railway social. Nicols Portable Steam Sawmill on Barwick property remains well stocked with rough and dressed lumber and mouldings. N J Barwick serves as Nicola agent and can fill orders of any size.

Nicola singer Mrs Armstrong wows with sacred solos

In a Presbyterian church service Mrs G B Armstrong of Lower Nicola sang I heard the voice of Josue say Come up to me and rest at morning worship. In the evening she offered Ora pro nobis and the recital was described as perhaps the best sacred solo heard in the Valley.

Vancouver based Similkameen Mining and Smelting Co forms to develop Bear Creek mineral claims in the Similkameen area. Directors include Mayor Buscombe and C. F. Law. Property spans over 200 acres with rich ore showing gold, silver and copper values from 12 to 680 dollars per ton. A wagon road from Tulameen eight miles away costs 9000 dollars. more eight miles planned to join Great Northern line. Shares offered at 2 dollars for a 10 dollar par value with no promoter fees.

Perjury Convictions in Vancouver Poisoning Case

Judge Henderson sentenced Mrs Jones to twelve months and Mrs Jackson to nine months for perjury linked to the coroner's inquest into Thos Jackson's poisoning death. Arrests dated December 22 last preceded the ruling as Mrs Jackson hurried from the courtroom followed by a constable amid verbal outbursts.
