The Nicola Herald presents expert notes by Dr Ells on the Nicola Coal Basin geology. It compares volcanic and sedimentary rocks, cites coal quality, and urges further drilling to determine seam continuity and district prospects as a future coal producer.
H W Sutcliffe reports a big strike on the L I X L and Aberdeen group near Nicola with promising development. J W Collis continues work while Golconda claim near Great Western on Broom Creek shows open cut exposing a rich mixed rock body with 18 inches of black oxide. Mrs Carrington hosts a successful cobweb party at The Pines with music games and refreshments. TEN MILE CREEK.
A correction to a 24th issue comment discusses the Nicola coal beds of the Coldwater group. H. F. Evans clarifies age classifications, argues the lower Miocene lies near early tertiary, and urges more data on the Nicola coal beds for economic impact. He stresses the need for light on the subject and deeper research.
James Dunsmuir through W J Sutton and Stuart Henderson secures 2800 acres of coal rights from the Charters Voght and Garcia interests near the Coldwater mouth. Bond and cash payments set, with work to begin soon and a prospecting program to be established on site. Henderson notes Nicola’s rising prominence and future development plans include additional adjacent properties. Labor Day bank closure noted with local subscriptions recorded.
William Charters, 61, died August 25 after a four day illness in Nicola Valley near Coldwater river. Born in Liverpool, he settled in Nicola in 1868 after travels from Victoria and Boston Bar. He amassed coal rights profits and left surviving brothers Robert and John, daughters in Carlisle, England, and many friends. Funeral held at Pooley's Hall with Rev. Govier officiating. pallbearers named.
The Nicola tennis event drew fewer spectators due to bad weather yet many locals attended. Megara George R. Philp and Gart Grahame won the finals after a tough match against Mrs. Tutill and Mr. Mason. Prizes were awarded at the Presbyterian manse with an Irish stew party earlier.
Engineer H J Cambie led a small survey party from Aspen Grove to Coutlee to review the line toward the Similkameen. The team will map elevations and confirm the route, following up the Povivy farm and Quilehen creek areas as the railway is planned to run level with Nicola.
In the Spences Bridge landslide, H J Cambie consulting engineer of the OC PR argues irrigation caused the disaster. He notes the arid region stores water and loses cohesion when saturated, citing a bench above the Thompson river. He warns further slides may occur with continued irrigation and water application.
Postmaster Carrington says the office will be renamed Nicola in sstead effective after August Sist, replacing the former Nicola Lake designation. The change updates official mailing addresses and local references to the post office.
