City moves to require wholesale licenses for all traveling salesmen and drummers, including cigar and dry goods traders, at a cost of 20 dollars. Hotel operators oppose the plan saying it will limit visiting drummers and hurt local business, while aldermen may resist mayoral enforcement.
London despatch says W. K. Vanderbilt has given half a million dollars to his daughter the Duchess of Marlborough as a bank for her safe return from the South African war after seven months service. The Duchess and Duke, in Paris, plan to invest in antique furniture for a Mayfair house. The gift of half a million dollars for the house was a Christmas present from the father.
