The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall traveled from Quebec to Montreal amid enthusiastic crowds. They arrived by royal train, received a formal welcome at Place Viger, were saluted by artillery, and met officials before a torchlight procession and fireworks. The visit included veterans honored with medals and a living Union Jack parade.
Montreal Sept 18 The King confers honors on nine Canadians during the Duke of Cornwall and York visit. Sir John Boyd and Louis Jette named Knights Commander of St Michael and St George. Companions include Joseph Pope Dr Peterson George Grant Oliver Mathieu, Oliver Howland, Major Maude. Thomas G Shaughnessy named Knight Bachelor.
Three hundred thousand residents lined streets as the Royal procession passed through Montreal. Cannon boomed and church bells rang while the Duke and Duchess, met by officials, appeared at Craig Street. Address readings, medals to South African veterans, and a triumphant welcome followed with a toren light parade of five thousand observers.
In New Westminster on September 18 Thomas Gifford defeated Hon. J C Brown for a provincial seat, a result seen as a government defeat. A switch was improperly set causing a rear collision on the New York New Haven and Hartford line at Avon. A passenger train from Boston to Hartford traveling at about 40 miles per hour struck a freight train. Six passengers were killed and 46 were injured.
Jimmy Michel defeated Bobby Walthour in a one mile motor paced race, the opening event of the indoor US championship series. Michel finished in 24 minutes 42 seconds, setting a new indoor record for 15 miles.
