Lord Roberts dispatches report from Bel on Sept two says a small Canadian Mounted Infantry garrison near Pan and Wondersfontein held off a Moorish force with two guns. Major Tanders and Lieutenant Moodie were lightly wounded. six men were slain or struck down.
Lord Minto may present two Humane Society medals to W. T. Hayes and Lawson I. Johnson of Trail for life risking rescue of Ethel May Carr from Columbia River flood. Mayor Goodeve holds medals, with diplomas detailing the rescue story.
Consul General C M Dickinson in Constantinople reports the Sublime Porte awarded a contract for two torpedo boats to a shipbuilding firm at once. The Turkish naval department completed plans and specifications for a cruiser to be built in the United States.

General Baden Powell arrived in Capetown this morning to a large public welcome. The crowd carried him on their shoulders from the railway station to Government House, a half mile, despite the early hour of his arrival.
Special dispatch from Halifax reports Hon. Messrs Fielding and Patterson opening the Liberal campaign. Patterson asserts the Ottawa platform of 1893 remains intact except Senate reform. Fielding outlines Canada's finances to June 30, noting revenue of 50,087,091 and a surplus of 7,940,402 after charges and capital costs, with debt reduction of 670,770.
