William H. Hol land bookmaker jailed in New York after he shot Samuel Heller ticket seller for Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in a saloon on April 5. He was arrested and held in 3500 bail for examination on February 2 on felonious assault charges.

Collision In Seattle Kills Clerk and Injures Fourteen

An electric car carrying two passengers was struck by a Northern Pacific train in Seattle May 20. Hamill Broad, a clerk, is dead. Fourteen others are injured including Frank Hoseltie with a broken leg and E. E. Hope with an arm smashed. several others listed as severely injured.

McMillan Presses for Prohibitive Canadian Lumber Duty

Senator McMillan of Michigan pressed Secretary Gage to impose a retaliatory duty on Canadian lumber imports under section 105 of the tariff act. If applied the duty would effectively bar lumber from Canada, including Ontario, entering the United States. The move targets all Canadian provinces and could shift timber trade.

Opposition Killed in Havana Troop Payment Rally

In Havana on May 29, a rally of Cuban troops eligible for American bounties ended opposition to the payment. About 300 privates applied, many not on rolls, with 99 rifles surrendered. Some applicants refused weapon handovers to the Havana Mayor, preferring direct delivery to American authorities.
