Osbourne Osborne January reports Queen Victoria die at 81 after paralytic stroke. Edward VII ascends as king with Emperor William I and royal family by bedside. London city officials and world leaders offer condolences amid embalming plans and funeral arrangements.
An official notice calls Parliament to assemble at 4 oclock this afternoon to administer the oath of allegiance to King Edward VII. The privy council meets in London today and the proclamation will be made at all places by custom. In London the King will preside over the council. A telegram from Osborne notes the Prince of Wales in relation to a family message.
Reports from London describe a city plunged into mourning and quiet as Victoria dies. Citizens discuss royal wealth distribution and possible move of King Edward VII to Buckingham Palace, with theatres closed and public life on hold.
London observers noted a drizzly evening as bells tolled across the capital after a royal death message. Crowds gathered near St Paul’s and Mansion House while shops closed and a two hour toll echoed for hours, continuing on the next page.
Victoria Alexandrina born May 24 1819, daughter of Edward Duke of Kent. She ascended the throne June 20 1837 after William IV’s death and was crowned June 28 1838. She married Prince Albert February 10 1840 and had nine children including Victoria Empress Frederick and Albert Edward who will ascend the throne. Princess Alice Duke of Edinburgh and Duke of Albany are dead.
Reports from Cowes Isle of Wight and London describe crowds at the royal gates awaiting the state yet recording the queen’s death. News wires note Dowager Empress Frederick grieving in Frankfurt while Barbadians mourn Queen Victoria’s passing.
Vancouver and Victoria suspend business for 24 hours, flags at half mast, and public events canceled. Ottawa orders 101 gun salutes in trigger of mourning. U S Congress adjourns to honor Queen Victoria with President McKinley sending condolences.
Berlin reports the Queen’s death sent papers into extra editions while Empress Augusta Victoria travels today to Hamburg. Germans echo British sorrow and deny early hopes the Prince of Wales will oppose Britain, asserting he will favor the British people and interests.
The Queen’s demise was announced at 10:55 AM by the Miner office. Bells at the fire hall and Methodist church rang for half an hour, then citywide closings followed, with the city hall set to close at 1 PM and most shops and schools suspending operations.
