Lawson funds hasten two 1902 trotting matches

Thos W Lawson of Boston sent two $5,000 cheques to back a world class trotting clash. Boralma versus Lord Derby and Boralma versus Abbott will run between July 15 and September 1, 1902 for $20,000 a side, best of five heats. Remaining stakes to be posted on signing, July first, and the night before the race.

Spokane man sentenced in county court for procuring

In Grand Forks on January 16 Judge Leamy found Sim Galloway of Spokane guilty of procuring and sentenced him to 28 months in the common jail with hard labor. Galloway had come from Spokane and allowed his wife to enter a disorderly house, but her testimony exonerated him.

Central American Presidents Attend Zelaya Reception at Corinto

President Zelaya hosted a large reception in Corinto Nicaragua honoring Presidents Regalado of El Salvador and Sierra of Honduras and General Molina Guatemalan war minister. The meeting welcomed other Central American representatives to discuss a peace proclamation. Thousands of Nicaraguans attended the event.

Province to create board of assessors for railways

H J Pettypiece introduced a bill in the legislature to appoint a provincial board of assessors to value railway telegraph and telephone properties. After valuation the rate of taxation by each municipality will be supplied and the assessors will fix a province wide rate. The tax on this average rate will be levied on corporations with 15 percent for government and municipal elections and 80 percent to municipalities by population. Commissioners serve six year terms with staggered retirements. salary 2500 dollars yearly plus expenses. secretary up to 2000 dollars. Highwaymen kill Guthrie sheriff and deputy in Anadarko area

Sheriff Smith and Deputy Beck were killed by highwaymen near Anadarko while storming an Indian hut. A 100 man posse chased the trio led by Bob McCune Ben Cravens and Bob Sims, with no arrests yet reported. The incident followed a churchgoers robbery by the same gang on Sunday night.
