Lords Rule Unions Not Shield for Malicious Conspiracy

London Aug 5 reports no division at the third reading of the kings declaration bill in the House of Lords. Premier Lord Salisbury stated Catholics do not want removal of the offensive wording and the government will not withdraw the declaration about Protestant secretaries. Catholics regret that the declaration may stand as is.

Terrific explosion devastates block in Philadelphia area

A gasoline blast in Locust street Philadelphia destroyed five buildings in a row, killing 10 to 20 or more and injuring over 40. About 35 people were inside the five structures when the explosion occurred. Fire followed as rescuers searched the wreckage and rushed the injured to Ferguson and Pennsylvania hospitals. Two hundred workers cleared debris, with no confirmed deaths by midnight.

Jenkins Rides Well at Hurst Park Meeting

London reports on August Bank Holiday races at Hurst Park where Clem Jenkins won three events. Frank Gardner's Bidder won the Wurst Park handicap, Nippon took the Mortlake handicap, and Angering captured the Scurry two-year-old plate. Thorburn Appointed Con stable and Farewell at Ymir

Erie Aug 5 John Thorburn of this place has been appointed constable there. He is a Royal Artillery man with seven years service. Rev E W Stapleford has preached farewell sermon and received purses from congregations at Ymir and miners. He leaves for Vancouver to lead Homer Street Church for six weeks then to Toronto to resume studies.

Kentucky Feud Sparks Rifle Fight at Vaneard Ranch

A 30 man gunfight in London Kentucky splits Stapletons and Hamptons from Benges over an old feud. Perry Hampton and Del ford Benges are badly wounded. More trouble is feared as the feud unfolds. The Baptist church starts a weekly Sabbath School Teachers class led by Mrs. Rattray with invitations to other teachers to attend. The session will follow the international lesson.

Short Council Session Ends After Twenty Minutes

A brief city council meeting last evening ran only twenty minutes from Alderman Samilton’s chair to adjournment for two weeks. The finance committee report was approved authorizing $2 881 in accounts and granting power to the city clerk to hire an assistant for assessments. The road to the new school site on block 49 will receive $150 in repairs. An amused moment arose when a councillor learned the meeting had concluded after the mayor informed him he could not attend.
