Arrest in murder case shocks Cranberry district

The body of Louis Stark, a mulatto rancher, was found near the Nanaimo River Falls on February 27, 1895. Ephraim Hodgson reported the discovery, noting injuries and a missing lamp. Hodgson was arrested at the N. and N. Extension mine and remanded until the 20th for further evidence.

Sockeye Salmon Run Draws High Catches at River Mouth

Salmon fishers report boats averaging 125 to 150 fish near the river mouth with some hauls up to 400. In Blaine officials say 122000 sockeyes were brought to canneries from Jan 1 to Jan 7, totaling 277000 and valued around 48000 dollars. Downriver catches run about 75 per boat, while canneries see glut and price drops to 10c or even 5c per fish.

Anti Chinese Committee Forms in City District

An executive group appointed at a mass meeting at the Opera House organized an anti Chinese campaign. The called meeting in the Council chamber elected Mayor Davison as Chairman, Ralph Smith as Secretary, Arthur Wilson as Treasurer, with a Finance Committee of Young Wilson and Stevyensen. The secretary was asked to delay circulating petitions to the Dominion Government until Nanaimo and Victoria can discuss the preamble. The meeting adjourned.

Campaign of Destruction Around Havana Aug 7

In a collision between mixed passenger trains near Havana an engine is smashed, several cars damaged and two passengers seriously injured. Insurgents burn tobacco fields at Union de Ris and Fumenito, plus La Carlotta and Alfonso XII plantations in Matanzas. seventeen horses destroyed. damage estimated at $600,000.

Fire Devastates Buckingham Ross Bros Mills

Ross Bros lumber mills at Buckingham were destroyed by a blaze on Aug 10 causing an estimated loss of 50 000 to 75 000 dollars insured. About 850 workers are left unemployed. In Halifax on Aug 10 a store under the Globe hotel suffered a smoke tied scare with two hotel boarders and a servant girl evacuated. In St Petersburg on Aug 10 talks among Rostovsky and other officials led to continuing the Behring Sea protection agreement of 1898 and pledges to safeguard trade and seal interests.
