London reports Joseph Chamberlain calls for government to propose a substitute for Gladstone’s Irish bills to ease Irish governance. A Faster conference may openly discuss land purchase as a path to liberal local government for Ireland.
The assembly debated the province budget with Hon. Turner noting higher revenue for the coming year around 700 000 and public works and education costs rising. Critics urged stronger railway policy and questioned tax fairness while predicting debt unless new borrowing or reforms are made.
A Montreal meeting of Heney and Lacroix creditors was well attended. A resolution passed urging creditors to accept Mr Heney's proposal of forty cents in cash, with sympathy for the firm and hope for a prompt settlement to resume business.
In Waterbury Connecticut tonight Andrew Delmis and Duncan C Ross wrestled for a five hundred dollar prize and the Police Gazette medal. Delmis won the first bout, but Ross captured the next three to take the match.
