While boasting of dry gear, he slips on a stone, sinks fully, and his companions must stand him on his head to drain the water. The episode lightens the scene as he continues to fish each season.
New York July 22 John L Sullivan still in town with the big $20 000 prize not yet paid but expected to be received within days. Stakeholder Cridge and Muldoon are on site and Sullivan has already collected about 4600 toward the total while backers prepare the division of the remaining funds with payments to Muldoon and the Illustrated News.
The Vancouver city council met last night with Mayor Bate and Aldermen Webb Abrams Baker Peck and Mahrer present. Bills from sanitary inspector Rowe and others were discussed for payment, with amendments to disallow report fees. The Street Committee reported inactivity, urged gravelling Commercial Street, and debated materials and cost. The meeting adjourned after approving a by law on contagious disease and addressing hydrant maintenance.
