A large popular demonstration is planned for Haywood with a line of march from Tavistock to Tivistock and a reception for the principal. A mass meeting at an open air garden will feature Haywood delivering an address if agreeable, with townspeople urged to attend.
Fernie notes a large August celebration with nearly 500 Hindus expected to arrive in Vancouver. A Canadian Bank of Commerce branch opens at Oreston. A coal barge on Kootenay lake sank near Proctor. Jimmie Britt and Gus Treader face death by their own actions in Cranbrook jail. Excessive heat triggers Spokane fire alarm. A Central Church soda stand opens in Syracuse to attract summer visitors.
The marriage of Mr. Wm. E. Schwantz of Moosejaw and Miss Birdie Hillier of Goderich was held at the Methodist church this morning. A full report will appear in next week's Leader.
C A Hood of Fort Wayne Indiana representing Deister Concentrator Co visits the 86 Eugene mill to oversee the installation of a No 2 Deister table while two No 1 size units are already in use. The tables are described as a new invention and are reported to be highly satisfactory wherever deployed.
Tom Summers, injured at the St. Eugene mine last week and hospitalized in Spokane, remains critical with little hope of saving his eye. His wife, his brother Phil and wife, and Wm. Bird are at his side.
Elliott Crowe, who has attended Columbia College in New Westminster, recently passed his examination and this week received a third class teacher's certificate. Master Hiliot has been a diligent worker in the school and shows splendid progress.
An eclectic, partially garbled Spokane segment notes Ban Evans and others traveling or staying for a few days in Spokane. It mentions Chas Peterson the barber installing a bathtub in his shop and references Miss Lillie Larson, Miss Annie Lofstrom, a visitor Toursday, and Mrs. James Weight returning from a visit to the east.
At Cranbrook last Monday P G Routh bought 12 milch cows and leased them to Geo Hudson who moved the herd behind the Rad er place to supply Moyie town. Hudson plans building and adding 20 more cows this fall. Cameron Batt auctioned nearby. J W Pitch expands to delivery service with a new horse and Calgary rig. Hawke back at work next week after back injury. Photographer R H Trueman to Moyie August 8 for a week. Moyie Methodist church gets a metallc ceiling and renewed interiors. James Dave and Lana Dave wed in Cranbrook and will reside in Moyie. Moyie school seeks male principal at $85 monthly to January 1, then $90 thereafter.
At the St Eugene mine the payroll grows with more men than ever as summer development continues. No dividends are cut, and the Lake Shore shaft will reach 600 feet, with plans for another station and drifting. A larger crew of carpenters works at the shaft house and mill additions, including changes for new cages and a sorting addition.
Chas A MacKay bought a 40 foot long, solidly built vessel from Messrs Meredith and Bridges. The boat, previously used as a wood barge, will receive an engine and be operated in connection with the Cambrian mine where MacKay serves as manager.
Eastern visitors arrive in Mogie with Me and Mrs B A Hill and Mr and Mrs J We Bitch. The party includes Mr and Mrs Harry Horton of Toronto and Mr and Mrs Hillier and Miss Hillier of Gidevich Ontario.
In a frail, garbled notice a Stephenson figure sold multiple parcels including three houses in the Sacre addition to W. H. Lied and Moyie area parties. The report notes a sense of departure and ongoing steady work in the trade, with no clear dates or names beyond the key bidders.
For a cooperative store in Moyie an open meeting was held Wednesday evening. G H Edwards chaired and Walter Wells James Roberts Rev Mr Boulton and others spoke. Roberts explained Rochdale cooperation and the motion to adopt it passed Roberts was named secretary and authorized to receive stock subscriptions by August 15. A start up committee includes Alf Brydle John Blackburn John Taylor G H Edwards P J Higgins H C Livesley Jas Roberts J L Gibbons and A L Ford.
Harry White secretary of the Labor Day celebration committee informs the Leader Cranbrook will celebrate Monday September 2 under organized labor management with a large labor demonstration expected.
The J. W. Gillette company staged two evenings in Murley hall starting Wednesday night with Shall We Forgive Her and Thursday presenting To Louisiana A dance followed Thursday's performance.
Geo Monro of the Munro family from Creston left this week for his old home near Galt Ontario where his mother and sister reside respectively.
A eastbound passenger train was derailed at a switch near Spokane last Monday due to an unlocked and tampered switch. The Moyie freight car and other cars caused a five hour delay. no one was injured. Passengers spent time sightseeing near the lake while the line cleared. A foreign train reportedly passed safely about 20 minutes ahead. Children playing near the switch were blamed for the tampering, though the outcome could have been fatal.
D J Elmer moves into a newly built hotel at Kingsgate near the railway. The old hotel is torn down and trains will stop for baggage inspections, aiding travel public access. More fixtures and furnishings arrive in about a month. Fitch's offers fresh fruits and vegetables daily.
