Mentone Branch annual meeting set for July 29 in the Recreation Hall with multiple speakers at 7 p.m. and various services listed in Cheltenham, Mentone, and surrounding halls. The record also notes state tide times for the coming week with high and low tides.
Cheltenham readers are reminded of a concert and living waxworks in Cheltenham Hall on Wednesday 29th. A strong musical programme is promised featuring Ally Sloper Mrs Grundy La Ponpes and Simple Simon. Proceeds go to St Matthews Organ and Chair Fund.
In Moorabbin the August election faces no new developments to date. Kelly has satisfied voters as a South riding representative, while an aspirant has yet to declare. West riding contenders Farrant Grace and Anster plan a three cornered race, North sees only the retiring candidate discussed, and East riding candidates Macartney and Castles engage voters with Macartney set to speak across the riding in the next fortnight.
In Dandenong North riding Dr Barden’s term ends and Mr J Hatty, a brewer, plans to contest the seat while Dr W Rain, the South riding retiring councillor, intends to seek re election. Rain’s illness recently worsened but he has since recovered and will attend municipal duties in a limited capacity.
Friends announce that J Hourshan, formerly station master at the local station, cannot continue in that role due to health. He has been allotted a high clerical position at the Spencer Street offices and will assume duties immediately. Well wishes are offered that the transfer aids his recovery and future service.
A nine performer string band led by A D Giroud entertained at a Mentone Recreation Hall euchre party last Saturday. Dances prompted a Cinderella Dance next week and Miss D Girond won the Muchre Tournament with R Ocyne. prizes went to Miss Prince and Mr J Tonini. The Mentone Football Club hopes to continue these events through winter. A poultry lecture by Mr Rintoul is postponed to next week. The new station staff changes include SM Cook moving to Cheltenham and SM Green transferring to Mentone, effective Monday.
In the next issue on Saturday August 1 a special illustrated page on Mordialloc development will be published. Advertisers should apply promptly at the office or Bungey’s news shop, with extra copies needed and requests due by Wednesday 28. A winter sale at Misa Shepheard’s drapery starts Monday for fourteen days. A local band meeting at Mechanics Institute saw Mr Giroud appointed band master. The Foreign Mission Hoand address and student performances were noted at the Hoan. A send off for Mr J Piper to India featured songs by Iris Hill Ruth Masdyke and others. A Moorabbin vs Mordialloc Bible lesson debate saw Moorabbin win. P L C meeting announced at Goggles rooms.
Mr J O Sullivan the popular teller at the E.9. and A. Wank is away on leave. Rumor says honeymoon but the claim lacks one eye. A pasty supper at Bal Galusilon dary saletilen held at the barracks Thursday night drew a great crowd. Captain Webb led music with seven fine items by Walker and ceevian tea baked by State or labor candidate for Henry eo W. Andrews to speak in ain street tonight at 8. Also Pere clubs euchre party at Mechanics Institute chaired by W. Ashmore O C Candwo.
Moorabb in residents organize a grand benefit concert for Mr Revell who suffers creeping paralysis and is fully disabled. The event on Thursday the 30th aims to cover medical and living expenses with tickets sold rapidly and chair to be provided by Mr Snowball M.L.A. Attendees are hoped to be large, with potential re selling or additional issues if needed.
The Kuobre and Cribbage Tourna tied for first with R. Austin Ist D. Larman 2nd and T. Walsh Booby. Cribbage winner was H. Hollis with W. Anderson 2nd. A playoff decided the booby prize with C. Judd winning. The tournament boosted library interest and popularity.
A lively Mentone skating carnival drew a large audience with decorations of wattle blossoms and ribbons. Prizes went to Miss Graceful Lady, Mr Penn Sateen, and several others, while Mr Ball of Melbourne judged the event. An innovation this season includes Wednesday skating and moving pictures, with a neon advertisement for an upcoming carnival on August 15.
