Word from Auburn Washington reports Reverend J Pate sustained a recent stroke. The notice notes health concern but provides no further details on condition or treatment.
Bud Barrett and Mrs. Dunstan visit. visits by Dr Leland and Rev McMillan. Sgt Spalding and Fred Reeves recoveries noted. Labour Day Monday September 7 observed by bank post office and stores closing. Holy Trinity church services begin 7 30 p m Sunday. Murray Bonner and Ray Salway back for weekend. James Morton visiting from Victoria.
Mrs. C. R. Hitchings and her son with Mrs. Palmer of Brandon visited A F MacKinnon last week. Les Horner, recently transferred from the R C A F station in Trenton Ontario, plans a Brandon visit before moving on. John T. Shanks Dr G M paid an official visit to Miniota Masonic Lodge with J J Henderson P G M and other visitors present.
Dr. R K Chalmers departed Monday for a two week visit to Palmerston and other Ontario points. He is accompanied to Winnipeg by his sister Mrs C Smith who has been visiting at his home for two months. The third anniversary of Canada’s entry into the war will be observed Sunday September 6 as a day of intercession for our armed forces and the United Nations. Many parents and friends of Hong Kong boys have heard from them recently and the Mac Phersons of St Vital report their son Donald is well.
Mrs B Barfield and her daughters have been visiting at the J Dickie home and with other friends, enjoying a time of social gathering. The visit includes time spent with neighbors and local acquaintances.
The Savoy Theatre Birtle presents Rio Rita musical comedy on Sept 3 4 5 and Abbott and Costello on Sept 7 8 9. A special double feature Tarzan's New York Adventure and Yank on the Burma Road shows Thursday and Friday at 8 30 p.m. Saturday offers two shows 7 30 and 9 30. Admission 30 cents for adults 20 cents for children with all children paying on Saturday night.
Ray Bolger and Anne Shirley star in Four Jacks and a Jill while Our Russian Front screens September 7 8 9. Moontide with Jean Garbin and Ida Lupino runs. Showtimes Thursday and Friday 8 pm Saturday two shows 8 10 pm Matinee 2 30 pm. Adults 30 cents Children 20 cents All children must pay admission.
Mr and Mrs Handford and a son left the J F Stracham farm Friday to reside in Brandon where Mr Handford will be employed by McArthur Transportation Co Imper ial Oi orders urged by phone to B F Leary on Miniata exchange line 55.
Cpl and Mrs George Traynor stationed at R C A F Dauphin spent time with Mrs W Taylor and family and other friends in town last week. Mrs A B Cunningham and daughter joined them and will visit at the J Spalding home for a period.
Reeve J. R. Lynch J Spalding W L Hodnett and Mr and Mrs C E Evans attended the funeral of Pilot Officer R T Hemmons at Wawanesa on Wednesday. Hemmons who was home on furlough was picked up by two fellow officers from Dauphin. After take off the plane crashed killing all three occupants. Full military honors were accorded the deceased.
A group of Miss Mattie E Taylor’s young friends held a linen shower Friday night at the home of Mr and Mrs R M Oliver. Miss J Bonner read an address and a Coca Cola delivery truck loaded with gifts was drawn in by Miss Flora Searth. The honoree thanked guests and announced her upcoming marriage to George Manson Fraser of the RCAF MedDonald in early September.
Congratulations are extended to Mrs William Howard as she marks her 96th birthday on September 3 a Thursday. Friends are hoped to visit and share in the memorable occasion.
Lloyd Spencer, on furlough, visits the A. Spencer home and plans a stay at his Winnipeg residence. He will transfer from the Calgary Air Force station to Toronto for the Cascin buttons. The Thilk plant shifts to cheese making, and Britain gains 25 000 lbs this year as casein button remarks end.
