Farm Notes Tips to Avoid Cattle Bloat
Fall is peak bloat risk for pasture cattle. Manage legume intake to 25 percent with lush legumes and 40 percent with late bud alfalfa. Limit grazing area, prevent selective eating, use green chop, and fertilize with nitrogen to suppress legumes. Inspect cattle hourly during day and avoid high risk setups at night by grazing grass heavy pastures or providing cereal grain pasture or hay away from risk. Have mineral oil ready and use proper dosing to prevent lung entry. If a cow staggers or goes down, an incision in the left flank may be needed to release bloat, with veterinary suturing required. Prompt action saves the cow.

Autumn’s color and Blue Bombers’ misty season
Reggie's Ramblings reflects on autumn landscapes and Keats’s season of mists, noting the Blue Bombers face a dim period with little fruit. The column urges tolerance for dissenting opinions and recalls an Italy thunderstorm incident where tourists were briefly naked but unharmed. It ends with a playful poke at social class dynamics and a sweepstakes remark.

Hazel’s Hints on Phosphate Limits for Laundry Soap
As of August 15, manufacturers limit phosphates in detergents leaving homemakers to adapt. Use softened water for best washing with soap, add 1 to 3 cups extra soap to maintain a dense suds head, and rely on water conditioners for hard water. Rinse with extra clear water, and wash with hot water at least 140 degrees.
