Manitoba farm notes warn of dry spring and fall grazing risks
Manitoba farmers face a dry spring with pasture shortages as beef cattle numbers peak, risking extended grazing into late fall. Legume pastures require a fall recovery period, six to eight inches of growth, soil testing, and phosphate fertilization to store reserves for winter. Northwest livestockmen plan an Oct six campaign against cattle grubs, distributing systemic insecticide to protect an estimated 20,000 cattle valued at about five million dollars. Directors including Vennis Trinder and George Boucher organize pickups across several towns, with broader plans for vaccination and fly control next. Agri-Views telecast on November 6 discusses farm diversification.
