Local and general news note the Reeve and most of the economic board attending the municipal convention in Winnipeg this week.
M. L. A. for Hamieta Wolstenholme is appointed Government Whip. United Church Bazaar Saturday invites early attendance with finas presents and cafeteria tea. A committee including J. Spalding W. Iveraeh H. L. Albright and Reeve Mitchell will meet the Education Department today on the school building question.
Charles Armitage underwent a serious appendicitis operation in Miniota on Thursday last and is recovering, with friends pleased by his progress under the circumstances.
Crandall celebrated the opening of its community rink last week with a carnival. A large crowd wore dainty and comic costumes, showing strong town spirit and local participation.
The funeral of the late Alfred Thompson occurred Thursday afternoon at Holy Trinity church. The service was led by Vicar Rev G L Armstrong with Rev E S Dixon assisting. Interment followed at Miniocta cemetery, with grave lowering by Bryant, R Bryant, C Dorward, H Chaltgers, J Walker and D Stewart, all elders.
A surprise move may bring entirely new liquor laws. While no concrete plan exists, hints point to a system similar to Alberta with beer sold by the glass and cash and carry for hard liquors. The issue was discussed in caucus and will be raised in the next legislative session.
It is almost certain the Miniota rink will not open this season. The town lacks enough volunteers to curl and cover the financing, with previous contributors reluctant to bear annual costs for those who enjoy the sport.
The Dominion government will pay about 1 250 000 to Western Canadian municipalities in arrears, with Manitoba towns receiving roughly 346 000. The Soldier's Settlement Board decision, announced by Hon Robert Forte, settles tax liabilities on crown lands owed by soldier settlers. Municipalities urged action for years, noting crowns own the land and penalties could not be used against tax debts.
