Summerfallow Nitrogen Low In Manitoba Fields
Manitoba soil surveys show two thirds of summerfallow land will need nitrogen fertilizer next spring for cereals, based on 12 000 acres analyzed. Low levels may stem from weed growth or denitrification in wet areas, with phosphorus similar to last year. Stubble fertility mirrors 1967, and 79 percent of fields need 40 to 60 pounds of nitrogen per acre. Fehr urges spring soil testing and notes storage cautions for agrochemicals.
