Britain Switches Cruiser Programme Amid Disarmament Pressures
In London the government announced replacing four smaller cruisers from the 1933 plan with two 9,000 ton ships and one 5,400 ton vessel. Sir Bolton Fyres-Monsell said the shift keeps total cruiser tonnage within the London naval treaty but risks lagging behind other powers in armament. Britain will build three cruisers rather than four to avoid inferior craft. The move follows concerns sparked by U.S. and other powers’ navies expanding cruiser programs.
