Manitoba farm notes nitrogen levels rise slightly in soil
Manitoba soil tests from 1000 fields in September and October show available nitrogen higher this year than 1971 in both summerfallow and stubble. Phosphorus and potassium levels are similar. Most summerfallow fields need under 20 lb N per acre for cereals next spring, with small shares at higher rates. Stubble fields mostly need 20 to 60 lb N, and phosphorus around 30 lb per acre with 10 to 35 lb for maintenance. potassium needs are low. University specialist Peter Fehr notes nitrogen rise likely from a smaller 1972 crop and extended soil nitrogen release, but cautions wide field variation. soil testing remains essential. For sampling, contact fertilizer dealers or provincial soil testing labs at the University of Manitoba.
