Oak River hosted the Birth District of Manitoba Women's Institute annual convention on Tuesday April 29. Delegates from local branches gathered to discuss program work and district activities. The report notes group leadership and upcoming events in the district.
The International Women's Year theme Equality Development and Peace was adopted with 125 registered. Special speaker Mrs June Menzies led a morning session alongside Mrs Pearl Warren and other speakers from Manitoba groups. Committee reviewed constitutional changes for the upcoming provincial convention and local groups staged choral and ensemble performances. Community Clean Up Day planned for May 24. Officers including Mrs G Hyndman were installed.
Mrs Wes Gregory spent a week visiting her granddaughter and husband in Pilot Mound. Mrs Wisner visited Oak Lake Wapella Sask and Virden recently. Agnes Levins spent days with her son-in-law and daughter Bob Gilmore at Foxwar ren. G Campbell of Killarney called on his mother G Morris. Bardwell visits Allan Armitage in Miniota. Sympathy to Mrs J Walker on nephew’s death at Flin Flon. Mrs Molly Black of Victoria B C hospitalized in Hamiota and visited Home. Sympathy to Mrs J Knight on sister Isa Bella Rothnie’s passing. Rodney Campbell and son of Clanwilliam visited grandmother V Campbell.
Elizabeth Stewart Pauline Rowan and Kay Grant attended the Recreation Conference for Senior Citizens at the Ag Centre in Brandon on May 12. The meeting aimed to learn about grants and resources and exchange information. A regional committee was formed to coordinate information with E Stewart to represent the area.
Legislature report quotes Morris McGregor defending oil producers and proposing larger aid for exploration. He urges extending per capita library grants to smaller towns, critiques civil service hiring as inflationary, and backs two racing bills to empower the Racing Commission. In the coming weeks interviews will be held for pre-kindergarten children in Hamiota Minot a Oak River and Kenton. The process includes hearing and vision tests immunizations blood and urine tests and a growth and development assessment. Parents should arrange a medical exam with their doctor and invitations are being mailed. If new to the area or not contacted by mid June call Pat Cochrane at 764 2412.
On May 11 the Glenlochar Community honored two newly married couples, Joss March and Arlene Armitage, and Cliff Walker and Candice Kendall, with a double shower at the Community Centre. Guests delivered corsages and gift baskets, Arlene and Cliff spoke gratitude, a pot luck supper followed, and attendees included Mrs Hooper of Birtle and others from Foxwarren Montreal Virden Isabella and Miniota.
