Control of Wild Oats Through Cultural Practices
The article explains wild oat growth differs from cultivated oats and survives ordinary cultivation. Dormancy after shedding and after ripening allow germination in cool soils. high soil temperatures inhibit germination. Early sowing on fallow land favors infestations, while delaying seeding to June 15 and using early maturing barley or green oats reduces wild oat presence. Further details are in Circular 11 from the LEFS, available via Line Elevators agents or Winnipeg Farm Service.
